Mad Men Glasses
Mad Men Glasses
The AMC award winning series Mad Men has inspired a whole new generation to appreciate vintage culture and attire. One of the most noticeable fashion objects from the show is the various "Mad Men Glasses", the various 1960s eye glasses spotted on many cast members and extras.
At the vintage optical shop we provide antique and vintage frames for film and tv shows. We have provided many of the vintage eyeglass frames for films such as Crimson peak, Night at the museum and the upcoming remake of Nightmare Alley. As such we are always interested in the vintage eyeglasses used for film and tv.
The plethora of 1960s vintage mens Eyeglasses and women’s vintage frames in the series such as cat eye glasses, horn rimmed glasses and browline glasses certainly sparked a Renaissance for these men’s and women’s vintage frames and caused a bump in sales of vintage frames here at the vintage optical shop. While we did not sell any Mad Men Glasses to AMC, we definitely sold many vintage glasses to people inspired by the eyeglasses in the Man Men series
It is hard to think of another prop that depicts an era more than vintage eye glasses. It is the first thing you see when looking at the actors. When depicting an era in film or TV it is important that all extras fit the part, not just the main charachters. A few characters in particular stand out and we’d like to discuss their vintage eyeglass frames below.
Don Draper does not wear eyeglasses. But we wish he had. His frames would surely be chosen carefully by the shows producers to match his complex personality. But luckily for us he does wear vintage sunglasses! He is constantly seen sporting a pair of aviator sunglasses from Randolph Engineering while driving a convertible or any other time the sun is shining.
Another character with vintage mad men glasses is roger sterling (John Slattery) this confident character with black 1950s eyeglasses ha surely inspired many Nd eyewear afficnado to copy his style .
Joan Harris, the secretary behind everything at sterling cooper quietly pulling the strings behind the scenes. We don’t think she would b able to pull it all off without those cat eye glasses!
One of the most noticeable vintage frames from mad men is worn by the Jim Cutler (played by Harry Hamlin). Those thick horn rimmed style 1960s glasses are both bold and stylish and say 1960s more than anything else you can wear.
Harry crane can be seen sporting various types of 1950s eyeglasses, from browline combination eyeglasses to black horn rimmed glasses to brown fade retro glasses. Likeability aside, he certainly knows how to wear a pair of frames.
